盧武鉉大統領、過密スケジュールのせいでブッシュ父に会えず

盧大統領が招待された別荘には、ブッシュ現大統領のクロフォード農場(テキサス州)が持っているような象徴的意味合いは無い。韓国側によると、ブッシュ大統領のクロフォード農場への招待は、個人的・政治的両面にわたる友好関係の表現だとされる。

Roh’s Schedule Too Tight to Meet Bush’s Father

U.S. President George W. Bush's father invited President Roh Moo-hyun to visit his summer home in southern Maine during the South Korean leader's stay in the United States next month, but Chong Wa Dae ``politely'' declined the offer due to Roh's hectic schedule, officials in Seoul said on Friday.

Officials at the presidential office and the South Korean Embassy in Washington said the invitation was delivered to Roh early this month through an ``acquaintance'' of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.

Roh and the former president have apparently built up a good relationship through three meetings, including September last year when the senior American received the Van Fleet Award from the Korea Society in New York and two months later at Chong Wa Dae.

``It is true that the former U.S. president invited our president,'' Yonhap News Agency quoted a Chong Wa Dae official as saying. ``But we had to politely decline it due to a scheduling conflict. I heard the decision was made after consultations with the U.S.''

Roh will visit Washington and San Francisco from Sept. 12-15 and a summit meeting will be held on the 14th in the U.S. capital.

A South Korean embassy official in Washington told the news agency that it receives hundreds of invitations prior to a presidential visit to the United States and the senior Bush's was ``one of them.''

The retreat where Roh was invited does not have the symbolic meaning that the incumbent U.S. president's ranch in Crawford, Texas, has. Many in South Korea interpret Bush's invitation to his ranch as an expression of friendship both in personal and political way.

As the integrity of the ROK-U.S. alliance is being questioned, the lack of an invitation from Bush to visit the Crawford ranch has been considered a sign of relations being adrift.

Many world leaders have visited the ranch, including Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in May 2003, former Chinese President Jiang Zimen in October 2002, British Prime Minister Tony Blair in April 2002 and Russian President Vladimir Putin in November 2001.

ジョージ・W・ブッシュ米大統領が怒り心頭だ。父親のブッシュ元大統領が盧武鉉大統領の９月の訪米時に家族の牧場へ特別招待すると申し入れたのに、これを韓国側が断った、という韓国の一部新聞報道のためだ。

ブッシュが父親に確認したら、それは今初めて聞いたという答だった。盧大統領側から訪米したいと言ってきて、特に理由もないのに余りにも哀願するから日程を調整したというのに…　それならどうして無いものを有るとマスコミ・プレーをするのか苛立たしい、とホワイトハウス高官が伝えた。＜中略＞

ホワイトハウスと国務省スタッフは、盧武鉉政権の人々に会うことを大変嫌がっている。理由は、盧大統領の二重プレーだ。前ではイエスと言いながら後ろを向けば別のことを言う盧大統領を信頼していないのだ。ホワイトハウスのブッシュ側近たちも、ブッシュ大統領が盧大統領を大変嫌っているのをよく知っている。＜中略＞

北朝鮮の核開発やミサイル発射を擁護する盧大統領と側近たちに対してひどい背信感を抱いているブッシュ大統領は、盧大統領が今度も記者たちの前で同盟の健在ぶりをアピールするショーを演出するものと見ている。ブッシュの側近たちは、「盧大統領はアメリカへ来なければいいのに」という反応だ。
